How Big is my baby at 18 weeks pregnant?

(April 6, 2011)

Although you probably have already spoken to your doctor and gone for checkups, and most likely have been keeping track of your baby’s weekly progress, your curiosity would still drive you to ask ‘how big is my baby when I am 18 weeks pregnant’. At week 18 you are well in to the second trimester. Try and relax and enjoy this stage of the pregnancy as much as you can, getting pampered or travelling to those destinations you’ve always wanted to. The second trimester usually brings some relief from those bothersome early pregnancy symptoms and your weight gain is not yet a hindrance.

At 18 weeks pregnant, the baby weighs about 6.7 ounces. The size of the baby at 18 weeks in the pregnancy is about 5.6 inches. At the 18 weeks fetus ultrasound, your doctor will have already told you the sex in case you want to know it. At this ultrasound, the baby’s health is checked along with the strength of the umbilical cord. At 18 weeks, the actual size of baby is as long as a bell pepper. At 18 weeks, fetal development is considerable.  There is definite fetal movement at 18 weeks. The genitals of the baby are distinguishable.

At 18 weeks, the baby is getting bigger every day. The uterus has distended quite a bit by the 18th week of pregnancy and is the size of a melon now. The uterus is below your belly button. By now most mothers have put on about 10 to 15 pounds but this is not a definite benchmark. The weight gain can vary with different women.

You will see a surge in your appetite now and will be eating more. You will even have a lot of vaginal discharge in pregnancy. It usually white and odorless and occurs because of the increased estrogen that the mother’s body is producing.  If this discharge becomes bloody or brown, you should mention it to your health care provider or to your doctor. If you are in stressful situations or conditions, do try and eliminate stress from your life. You will also feel some pain in the abdomen where the joints are beginning to loosen themselves. Sleeping from this week on gets very uncomfortable. You should start using supports like pillows if you haven’t already started. You will feel a rise in blood pressure and can get dizzy as you body is pumping more blood.
