Slimy Discharge In Pregnant Women

Pregnancy brings about plenty of changes in an expectant mother and these changes are not only restricted to an expanding waistline. Hormonal alterations play a vital role during pregnancy and they contribute to a major number of adjustments that the body faces at this stage of a woman’s life.

A change in the quantity and texture of vaginal discharge during pregnancy is common. At the outset, after conception, the fertilized egg goes through a process called implantation. At this time, it burrows into the uterine wall and this action results in a minor amount of bleeding. This is responsible for pinkish or brownish stained discharge during the initial weeks of pregnancy. As the pregnancy progresses, the amount of discharge increases due to the increased flow of blood to the pelvic region as well as the hormonal changes that occur in the body. This slimy discharge during pregnancy is called leucorrhea and is absolutely normal provided it is clear and odorless. It may bear a mild odor, at times. As the weight of the uterus increases, pressure is exerted on the cervix and the blood vessels in the cervical region become sensitive. The friction caused by intercourse or an internal ultrasound could rupture a blood vessel in the cervix and this could be the cause of brown slimy discharge during pregnancy. A green or a yellow slimy discharge during pregnancy could be a reason for worry since it could be indicative of an infection that could pose a threat to the success of the pregnancy. This is especially true if the discharge has a repulsive odor and is accompanied by irritation or a burning sensation in the vaginal region. In such cases, the discharge could also have a cottage-cheese kind of texture.

If a continuous clear slimy discharge during pregnancy is observed, one must be alert as it could be caused by a leak in the amniotic sac. This is a sign of labor and if it occurs early in the pregnancy, measures can be taken to avoid pregnancy loss or preterm delivery, if detected in time. A thick slimy discharge during pregnancy, mainly witnessed towards the end of the pregnancy term, is usually the mucus plug which gets expelled when the time for delivery is at hand. One must bear in mind that if any form of bleeding or change in discharge is experienced during pregnancy, it could be indicative of the risk of pregnancy loss and informing your doctor of the same is recommended.
