Baby Sleep Training Methods
Submitted by Jenifer on January 19, 2012
Your new born baby wakes up crying in the middle of the night. You are stressed out, but what bothers you most are his health and his well being. Until the age of six months, newborn babies will wake up repeatedly during the night to feed and will be habituated to this pattern. After six months they need to be trained to fall asleep on their own. There are two schools of thought regarding baby sleep training methods.
The first is the ‘cry it out’ or CIO method.

In this method you have to put your baby to bed when he is tired and sleepy but still awake. You must then leave the room. He will start crying and not fall asleep.
Return to the room after five minutes and calmly console him, but do not pick him up. It is important to stay calm as babies get adversely affected by emotional disturbances. Stay for no more than 2 to 3 minutes and leave the room again. The second time you must stay away for ten minutes. When you return repeat the same process and try to console him. Remember not to pick him up and leave the room again after 2 to 3 minutes. The third time, stay away for fifteen minutes before returning and repeating the process. Keep repeating this cycle of staying away for fifteen minutes and returning to console him for two minutes. Eventually your baby will fall asleep.
Gradual Withdrawal Method
If you feel this method is too harsh for your baby, then you can consider the gradual withdrawal method. In this method, instead of leaving the room you have to sit down on a chair next to the cot and keep calmly telling him to go to sleep. Once again you must not pick him up. The second school of thought regarding baby sleep training is the no tears method. It involves a gentler and more gradual approach to sleeping that is customized to your baby’s needs. Rock and feed your baby till he is drowsy and then put him down. If he cries, pick him up again and rock him. This method uses physical closeness to create a positive association with sleep in your baby’s mind, resulting in healthy sleep patterns later on.
Lastly, here are some tips regarding baby sleep training.
- Feed your baby regularly throughout the day. This will make him habituated to the idea of eating during the day and sleeping at night.
- Create a soothing bedtime routine for him and put him to bed early.
- Don’t eliminate daytime naps as these may make him overtired.
