It takes approximately four to six weeks for your uterus to get back to its shape while the body slowly gets rid of all the excess fluids and weight it has accumulated. You can speed up the process by exercising and watching your diet and calorie intake. This will help to burn off the extra fat that your body had stored to nourish your growing baby.

But the process will take time, there is no getting over that. You will have to learn to cope with that tummy till the time that the right diet and the exercise help you to get back into shape. It helps if your wardrobe has the right kind of postpartum clothes, the kind that will disguise your tummy and make you look slim. You can have a wardrobe of suitable postpartum clothes that is both fashionable yet practical for a nursing mother.

What to wear

It’s not only disguising your tummy that is important. If you are nursing, you will want to wear something practical that will make it easy for you to feed your baby. Your clothes will also need to disguise any stains that may result from leaky breasts. Since most of these clothes are only temporary, you don’t want to waste too much money on them so they need to be easy on the pocket. On top of it all, you want to feel good about the way you look. Here are some tips on what to wear after your delivery.

  • Accept the fact that it is going to take time and effort to get back to your old shape. The time will pass quickly and most of the time your focus is going to be on the baby, so don’t stress.
  • Do not spend too much money on a new wardrobe as you will need these clothes for only a short while.
  • Wear dark colored tops or dresses. Dark colors are slimming and will help to disguise your tummy. They will also help to disguise any stains that may occur due to your leaky breasts.
  • If you plan on breastfeeding your child, you will need an adequate supply of feeding bras. If you are at home, you can try wearing a maternity vest and a loose jersey on top. To feed your baby, all you need to do is to pull up the jersey and pull the vest down. Tuck absorbent pads into your bra to avoid those wet marks.
  • Wear dark colored maternity jeans and tops with stretchy, crossover v-necklines. These will have a good chance of fitting you even after you have lost weight, although you would probably be sick of them by then.
  • You can try wearing skirts with the fabric gathered at the waist. This will drape better over your tummy.
  • Carry a scarf or a shawl with you to provide some cover for when you are breastfeeding.
  • Try hunting for some old shirt dresses made of denim or some other thick fabric. While it may not be able to hide your bump, the continuity can be reassuring. A belt worn low can also add a bit of dash.
  • Avoid wearing heels for some time. Your back is going to be under enough strain as it is. Wear comfortable flats or walking shoes.

What to Avoid

Here are a few tips on what to avoid wearing after your delivery:

  • Do not wear tight clothes such as tight jeans.
  • Avoid wearing light colored clothes.
  • Avoid wearing tight T-shirts.
  • Avoid wearing high heels or uncomfortable shoes.
