Coping with Baby Sleep Problems

Almost every baby needs a lot of care and attention when awake and every parent feels relieved when the baby goes off to sleep and looks so calm and snug. However every baby has his or her unique sleep pattern and this varies vastly during the day and night.

Unfortunately most newborns do not have the ability to sleep throughout the night and this may affect you, especially if your sleep pattern continues to break throughout the night, night after night. During the first few months, most newborns sleep for approximately 8 hours at night but the baby does not sleep at a stretch and the sleep pattern is usually broken due to nutritional needs during the waking period.

In order to cope with common baby sleeping problems, here are a few helpful baby sleeping tips that can help in dealing with your baby's sleep patterns.

Baby Sleeping Tips

Sleeping, which is unlike eating cannot be enforced upon a baby and hence one way of ensuring that the baby is comfortable enough to sleep is to build a secure and warm environment that can induce and gently lull the baby to sleep. In many cases, health experts notice that sleep problems seen in older children and young adults are the result of an unhealthy attitude towards sleep that was formed during their early formative years. Hence it is important to create an environment that causes the baby to enter into a pleasant state of mind. Nighttime parenting requires different strategies altogether and is just as important as daytime parenting.

  • Refrain from adopting sleep trainers or artificial methods to get your baby to sleep through the night as these techniques such as vibrating cradles, cot vibrators that simulate a car ride, and large dolls or furry soft toys that "give an impression of breathing" can make it difficult for the child to sleep on its own especially in the absence of sleep inducing gadgets or programs.
  • It is important to remember that there is no universal approach that works with all the babies all the time or works for the same baby every time.

Each child is unique and distinctive and if you perceive that a particular method is failing do not continue with it. Create a particular night time parenting style that works best for you and your baby. Each baby has a different nighttime temperament and unfortunately families too have distinctive lifestyles that do not match the baby's temperament and hence it is important to create a particular style for all.
  • Determine the place where the baby is likely to sleep the best. There is neither a right nor wrong area for babies to sleep. In most cases, the place where all family members rest at night can be the best place for you and your baby. In some cases, babies sleep peacefully in their own cot or cradle, some snooze best in their own perambulator or baby bed in the bedroom, while some other babies rest best when cuddled right close to their mother. It is important to be open to varying modes with regards to the baby's developmental requirements and your family situational changes
