Getting pregnant in Your 40s

Many women who are 40+ do conceive and go on to have normal pregnancies and healthy babies as well. So getting pregnant in your 40s is not such an issue as it was in days gone by. However, getting pregnant in your 40s comes with its share of advantages and disadvantages. Read on to find out more about the pros and cons of getting pregnant in your 40s. The main advantage of getting pregnant in your 40s is that by this age, you will be emotionally and financially ready for a child. Apart from this, you and your partner will have had enough time to do whatever you wanted to as a couple. You will also have had the chance to get to know each other and in all probability be strong as a couple, which is a good foundation for raising a child. You will be less bothered about focusing on yourself and more concerned about focusing on your child. The disadvantages all stem from the health point of view. Women in this age bracket often develop complications such as pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, high blood pressure and so on. Chances of having a baby with a chromosomal problem are higher as well.

Chances of Getting Pregnant in 40s

Now that you are aware of the pros and cons of getting pregnant in your 40s, let us take a look at your chances of getting pregnant in your 40s. Research over the years has shown that the chances of getting pregnant in your 40s depend on how far into your 40s you are. Getting pregnant in your 40s is not easy but it is not impossible either. As a woman loses her age, she becomes more infertile. Studies show that a 40 year old woman has a 5% chance of getting pregnant, per month. Another problem with getting pregnant at this age and one that affects your chances of getting pregnant is that the miscarriage rate begins to increase in your 40s as well.  There are also many women who once they reach this age, stop ovulating each month. Thus it is more difficult to figure out when you are at your most fertile.

However, there are women who still get pregnant in their 40s. While it is sometimes difficult to do so, do not give up hope. Many women opt for fertility treatments such as IVF (in vitro fertilization) or ICSI (Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection) in order to conceive. You can also try using donor eggs to conceive as it will increase your chances of having a baby. Make changes to your lifestyle to help improve your fertility. Stay fit, and eat well too. While it is sometimes difficult to get pregnant at this age, do not give up hope.
