A miscarriage is the spontaneous loss of a fetus, before the 20th week of pregnancy. Unfortunately, the chances of a miscarriage are quite high during the first trimester. It is believed that almost 15% to 20% of all the confirmed pregnancies result in a miscarriage within the first 12 weeks (three months). The actual figures could be much higher though, as many women do not even realize that they are pregnant till the 7th week or so. In case they have a miscarriage at around that time, they may not even realize it. Many women completely misread the signs of miscarriage at 7 weeks; instead, they believe that they have got their periods a bit late.

What are the signs of miscarriage at 7 weeks?

There are many different signs of miscarriage at 7 weeks, which can alert you to the fact that something is wrong with the pregnancy or the baby. Given below are some of the most common signs and symptoms of a miscarriage at 7 weeks pregnant:

  • Vaginal bleeding or spotting
  • Abdominal cramps, ranging from mild to severe, accompanied by heaviness
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Leakage of the amniotic fluid
  • Passing of blood clots
  • Discharge, which is usually pinkish in color
  • Pain in the back, abdomen and pelvic region

There are other signs of miscarriage at 7 weeks too, which are not very common and could in fact be indicative of a serious problem, like a septic miscarriage.


Visit your doctor immediately, in case you notice:

  • Chills and fever that accompany vaginal bleeding
  • Cramping that lasts for a long time
  • Pain and bleeding that go on for more than 4 or 5 days
  • Vaginal discharge that has a foul odor

It is not necessary that you will experience all the signs of miscarriage at 7 weeks, even if you do lose the pregnancy; you may only experience one or two of them. If you do know that you are pregnant and have been experiencing pregnancy symptoms such as breast tenderness, nausea, fatigue and frequent urination, you may know that you have had a miscarriage, when these symptoms stop. The cessation of pregnancy symptoms is also one of the signs of a miscarriage at 7 weeks.

There are several women, who have experienced mild cramps, light bleeding, discharge or spotting, in the earlier stages of pregnancy but have gone on to have healthy babies. Sometimes these symptoms could be an indication of a problem that needs to be checked and treated as soon as possible. To make sure that you address any pregnancy problem right away, it is essential for you to inform your doctor as soon as the first signs of miscarriage at 7 weeks appear.
