Pregnancy is a period when most women experience symptoms that they may have not experienced during other times in their lives. These include symptoms such as morning sickness, mood swings, craving for food, and insomnia. Estimates show that about 75% of all women who are pregnant suffer from some type of insomnia. One of the main causes of insomnia is hormonal imbalances, but you need to remember that this isn't the only reason. Other causes for insomnia could be panic, anxiety, and the fear of moving on to parenthood. Some women find it tough to fall asleep as they are not yet accustomed to their body shape.

For insomnia during pregnancy, medications are very often best avoided. Most doctors are reluctant to prescribe anything for insomnia during pregnancy. Medications, they feel, are best avoided and generally recommend lifestyle changes and treatments and remedies that are natural.


If you are suffering from insomnia during pregnancy, medications of any type may have some side effects that can endanger your child. Sometimes for insomnia during pregnancy, a pill taken to induce sleep might be habit inducing and can lead to dependence.

For those suffering from insomnia during pregnancy, medications and cures should always be tried only after consulting your doctor. Remedies that are harmless for you under normal circumstances may not necessarily be good for your baby. Hence, if you are suffering from insomnia during pregnancy, instead of medication, opt for some these practices to help you sleep better.

  • Have a warm bath or shower as this will help to relax your muscles.
  • If you suffer from insomnia during pregnancy, medications and cures that are allopathic in nature may not be an option. However, lighting scented candles in your room can create a relaxing aura and in many cases it can provide deep soothing sleep.
  • A relaxing foot massage will help to induce sleep.
  • Play soft and soothing music in your room.
  • Check with your doctor and exercise daily; try going for a walk each day.
  • Meditation and yoga help relieve stress.
  • Try using a pregnancy pillow or a whole body pillow for support.
  • Pen down your thoughts before going to sleep so that you don't dwell on them in bed.
  • If you are suffering from insomnia during pregnancy and medications are not an option, you can simply drink a glass of warm milk to which honey has been added before you go to bed. This will ensure that your tummy feels full and that you don't wake up feeling hungry at odd hours of the night.
  • Use dark curtains in your room to block out light so that you are not easily disturbed.

Insomnia during pregnancy is not a serious problem and generally goes away once your child is born. However, it is important that you control it as it could lead to a lack of attention, increased levels of stress, and irritability.
