Infertility Tests for Men and Women

Infertility is one of the most challenging conditions faced by both, men and women alike. It can prove to be one of the most frustrating experiences for a couple because despite several attempts to conceive a child, no positive result is seen.

Testing for infertility must be considered if a couple fails to conceive a child in spite of regular intercourse, without having used any birth control measures for over a year. If the man finds it difficult to ejaculate or is unable to maintain an erection until the completion of the act of lovemaking, male infertility tests are highly recommended.

Infertility tests are highly recommended especially if the woman experiences irregular menstruation or recurrent abdominal pain or cramping.

Male Infertility Tests

The most common male infertility test is a semen analysis as it helps to determine the condition as well as the status of semen and sperm. Through this test, sperm quality, sperm motility and sperm count can be assessed and this provides vital information as sperm play a vital role in the process of conception. Blood tests may be performed to check hormonal levels or the presence of certain germs. Extensive examination and ultrasounds may also be used to ascertain the condition of the reproductive organs.

Female Infertility Tests

For women, blood tests are conducted to check the hormone levels in the blood stream, primarily of the follicle stimulating hormone and the luteinizing hormone as these hormones play a vital role for conception. Tests are also done to check for ovulation. The cervical mucus is tested to ensure that it is not unfavorable for the survival of sperm. An abdominal ultrasound is usually recommended to check the reproductive organs for any irregularities. An endometrial biopsy may also be conducted to check for any disease or abnormalities in the uterus.
