Causes of clotting after pregnancy

Almost all women pass at least a few blood clots in the first few days after the baby is born. However, as the days pass, the presence of these blood clots should tail off and stop eventually. This phenomenon of clotting after pregnancy is quite normal and is known as lochia.


This occurs when the womb or the uterus shrinks back to its normal size. When the clotting after pregnancy occurs because of lochia, the presence of the clots should not last for more than two or three weeks. Moreover, when lochia is the cause for clotting after pregnancy, it is possible for the woman to experience pain too.

However, many women notice blood clots even after the baby is three or four weeks old. This too is not uncommon, in case the woman has increased her levels of physical activity. Hence, exerting the body too much is quite likely to result in clotting after pregnancy. In order to prevent this, women are advised to pace themselves during the day and get an adequate amount of rest too.

One of the causes of clotting after pregnancy, which could be a cause for concern, includes an infection, which could set in around two or three weeks after the baby is born. These infections are generally caused by either a piece of placenta or a membrane that stays behind in the uterus, after childbirth. Some of the other symptoms that are also seen in addition to clotting after pregnancy, include fever and sharp pains in the stomach. This is quite a serious problem, which needs to be addressed without any delay.

Therefore, all women are strongly advised to consult their medical health care providers, to determine the exact cause of clotting after pregnancy.
