Conditions For Hemorrhoids During Pregnancy

Pregnancy and hemorrhoids can be linked on the grounds of increased blood circulation and constantly changing hormone levels in the body during pregnancy. An increased production of progesterone for instance, results in the softening of the vein walls, leading to their damage and improper functioning. Hemorrhoids during pregnancy may also be the result of the increased pressure on the pelvis veins on account of the growing size of the uterus. Another factor that links hemorrhoids and pregnancy is improper bowel movements or digestive problems during pregnancy. Most women experience improper bowel movements or digestive problems during pregnancy and as a result they experience constipation. Straining to make one’s bowels move during pregnancy is one of the primary causes of hemorrhoids in early pregnancy. Difficult labor that involves a great deal of pushing or straining also tends to result in hemorrhoids during pregnancy.

Care for Hemorrhoids During Pregnancy

There are several ways to care for hemorrhoids in pregnancy.

One of the simplest and most effective ways to relieve pain is to apply a cold compress. You can apply an ice pack or a soft towel soaked in cold water on the affected area as frequently as possible to reduce pain and inflammation. Alternatively, you can add some witch hazel to cold water and soak a towel in this and apply on the affected area for a soothing effect. Use pre-medicated or moistened wipes when you suffer from hemorrhoids in pregnancy. This will ensure that you don’t damage the area or aggravate the condition.

Consult your doctor about possible treatment options. He/she may recommend suppositories and other methods to care for hemorrhoids and prevent their occurrence. Another method of alleviating symptoms of hemorrhoids during pregnancy is to soak your bottom in a tub of warm water or what is called a sitz bath. This is very soothing and provides immediate relief.
