Quit Smoking During Pregnancy

If you are pregnant, you need to be careful and ensure that you take good care of yourself. If you are healthy, you are sure to have a healthy baby and vice-versa. During pregnancy, people around you may bombard you with loads of advice and many do’s and don’ts. However, it is you who has to decide what to follow and what to exclude.

The most important thing you need to do is quit smoking if you are a smoker. Smoking impairs fetal growth and increases the risk of many psychotic problems in children. When you smoke, it reduces the oxygen level in your body, and as a result, your baby in the womb receives less oxygen and food than he/she is supposed to.

When the placenta is deprived of adequate food and oxygen, it spreads out throughout your uterus seeking more oxygen and nutrients. When doing so, it tends to go thinner, resulting in the risk of placental abruption, a condition where the placenta separates from the uterine wall, and placenta previa, a condition where the placenta covers the cervix.

As a result of this deprivation, your baby is born with a lower birth weight and may develop lung problems due to poor lung function. Smoking during early pregnancy can also encourage preterm labor or premature rupturing of the uterine membranes as your body feels that it is unable to feed the baby properly.

Smoking cigarettes during pregnancy can also increase the risk of having vaginal bleeding. Besides these, the possible risk of having an ectopic pregnancy also increases double-fold.  Also, it can also result in an increased risk of apnea or breathing lapses and sudden infant death syndrome, wherein the babies die after birth. The baby can also have a greater risk of suffering from some genetic defects like a cleft lip and a cleft palate. Moreover, your child may suffer from respiratory diseases like asthma, tuberculosis, ear infections, cancer, food allergies, short stature, and attention disorders.

Tips to Quit Smoking in Pregnancy

To help you quit smoking, here are some easy tips:

  • Pen down the reasons for quitting this habit. When you are tempted to smoke just go through the list.
  • Choose a day, and quit smoking from that day on.  On this day discard all cigarettes, ash trays, and lighters.
  • Stay away from places, activities, and people who may tempt you to smoke.
  • Keep trying and never give up.

Apart from quitting smoking during pregnancy, even second-hand smoke during pregnancy can harm your child. Thus, it is best to keep away from cigarettes and smokers alike.
