Reasons for Snoring During Pregnancy

Pregnancy snoring might be due to any of the following reasons:

  • Usually, snoring in pregnancy occurs due to an increase in weight. Weight gain can cause the muscles of nose and throat to expand and hence results in snoring.
  • Hypertension is another common reason for snoring during pregnancy. The size of the blood vessels of the nose and throat increases because of high blood pressure. This causes an obstruction in breathing and results in snoring.
  • Sleep disturbances are another major cause for pregnancy snoring. Due to hormonal and emotional changes that occur in your body during pregnancy, you may experience sleep disturbances. Consuming beverages containing caffeine or alcoholic drinks can also adversely affect your sleep.

To prevent snoring during pregnancy, take the following steps:

  • Although it is normal to put on some weight during pregnancy, this is no excuse to add to your woes by eating fattening foods. Do not eat foods containing excess fat and consult your dietitian for advice on a balanced diet.
  • Instead of sleeping on your back, try to sleep on your side.
  • Raise your head by placing an additional pillow below your head. This will help you breathe better.

  • Do not use sedatives or sleeping pills.
  • Avoid smoking during pregnancy.
  • Do not consume alcoholic beverages and caffeine based drinks before you hit the sack.
