Individuals who are prone to migraine headaches tend to have blood vessels that react with increased sensitivity to triggers such as stress, fatigue, changes in weather, emotions, biological changes, environmental factors, bright or flickering lights and consumption of certain food. Migraines can be of two types, classic and common. A classic migraine is the type that results in the appearance of an aura, which is a neurological occurrence. The aura appears about ten to thirty minutes prior to the headache.

These are generally visual in nature and are often perceived as flashing or shimmering lights surrounding objects or along the periphery of the field of vision. There may also be temporary vision loss. The pain associated with such a migraine may be felt as a pounding or throbbing in the forehead and temples, jaws, ears and around the eye area. The pain may begin on one side and then spread to the other side of the head. A common migraine may persist for about three or four days and symptoms may include change in mood, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, fluid retention, diarrhea, increase in urination, and a “fuzzy” mental state.

It is also common for the symptoms of migraine to mimic symptoms of other medical conditions. As such it is advisable to consult your doctor, if such symptoms are experienced.

Causes for Migraine Headache During Pregnancy

A migraine in early pregnancy is a normal occurrence as changes take place in hormonal levels and blood circulation increases. Other possible causes could include sleep disruptions, sinusitis, fatigue, stress, dehydration, hunger pangs, and allergies. The headaches usually subside during the second trimester as the body gets accustomed to hormonal changes. In the latter part of the second trimester and in the third trimester, headaches may be indicative of a condition called preeclampsia caused by high blood pressure which requires immediate medical attention. Migraine or tension headaches that occur in the late stages of pregnancy could result from postural problems due to the weight of the developing baby. Migraines during pregnancy are usually relieved through the use of cold compresses, rest and stress avoidance.
