Recurrent Miscarriage Causes
There can be many causes for recurrent miscarriages. A majority of miscarriages result due to chromosomal abnormalities. These occur commonly in women about 35 years of age. In most cases, these chromosomal errors occur randomly and are likely not to occur again in future pregnancies. Chromosomal defects are usually not the result of traits inherited from the parents. Advancing age can also increase the likelihood of miscarriages. After a woman is 35 years, the risk of her experiencing a miscarriage increases. After 40 years of age, this risk further rises. It is however possible for miscarriages to also occur in women below the age of 35 years. A small percentage of miscarriages also occur due to abnormalities of the uterus. These include an abnormally shaped uterus, double uterus or scar tissue in the uterus. These defects interfere with the implantation of the egg and also hamper blood supply to the uterus. Uterine malformations may also restrict the amount of space that is necessary for the baby to grow properly.
Another cause of recurrent miscarriages is an incompetent cervix. This may result in miscarriage in the second trimester or early labor.
Treatment for Recurrent Miscarriage
A woman suffering from recurrent miscarriages will need to undergo a variety of tests. These tests will help to determine the root cause of the condition so that the doctor can suggest appropriate treatment. There are various methods of treatment and based on a woman's medical history as well as any other health conditions, the doctor will decide on a single or combined medication strategy. A hysterosalpinogram is performed to examine the shape of the uterus and to check for the presence of scar tissues. An endometrial biopsy may also be done if imbalances of hormones are suspected to be the cause. If insufficient progesterone levels are detected, supplements are administered to the woman. Women with possible autoimmune disorders may be tested through a coagulation based or direct antibody test.
Medications may be given to suppress the immune system. Structural defects may be corrected through surgery. This will help to increase the chances of having successful pregnancies in the future. In case of chromosomal defects, the couple may be directed to a genetic counselor who would be able to detect the exact problem through genetic testing.
