Common Causes of Miscarriage During the First Trimester
Most miscarriages that take place during the first trimester (almost 60% of first trimester miscarriages) remain unresolved. Medical experts surmise that most causes of miscarriage during the first trimester are usually due to genetic reasons, at the time when the chromosomes simply decline to replicate accurately.
It is a common assumption made by most people who presume that a miscarriage occurs when the pregnant mother experiences a fall, grave illness, or may have been exposed to something that would have triggered the miscarriage.

However, in most cases a miscarriage is triggered by chromosome abnormalities. If a woman experiences the preliminary symptoms of miscarriage and gets immediate medical help, she may be able to carry her baby to full term and have a normal delivery. This is known as a threatened miscarriage.
Miscarriage Causes First Trimester
There are several causes of miscarriage in first trimester. Chief among them include:
- Hormonal imbalances
- Chromosomal shortcomings
- Inherent difficulties with the uterine cavity or cervix uteri
- Autoimmune conditions
- Untimely breach of fertilization membranes and premature labor
- Defective ovule
- Extra uterine gestation,
- Hydatidiform mole (An abnormal physical condition during pregnancy, wherein the placenta around the fetus deteriorates and form bunches of fluid-filled pouches which is fatal to the unborn child)
- Spontaneous abortion
- Severe infections,
- Advanced age,
- Chronic and degenerative disorders of the body
Some other causes of first trimester miscarriage include venereal disease, pneumonia, severe urinary tract infection, toxoplasmosis, or protozoal health problems such as dengue or malaria. Some women worry that an upper respiratory infection might cause a miscarriage, but it is not likely that a simple cold has the potential to affect the birthing process. However, viral transmissions such as AIDS and German measles are likely to induce a miscarriage.
Moreover, there are a few common sicknesses that can induce a spontaneous abortion or fetal deformity if the pregnant mother contracts it for the very first time in her life, during pregnancy. These include chickenpox and fifth disease. Under normal circumstances, every woman is immune to these diseases during pregnancy; however it is always advisable to ask your gynecologist to run an antibody titer to rule out your suspicions.
If the pregnant mother experiences a high fever during the first trimester, especially a fever that crosses over 101°F, it must be treated immediately and without any delay. There is a strong possibility that a fever experienced by the pregnant mother extended over a long period of time can affect the baby. Some other common health problems that can cause miscarriage during the first trimester include diabetes, thyroid disorders and cardiovascular conditions. Simple accidents normally do not induce a miscarriage, because the baby is well enclosed in its amniotic sac and is surrounded by the protective fluid, and hence a setback to the abdomen can shield the baby from harm
