Premature Rupture Of Membranes During Pregnancy (PROM)
“Good fences make good neighbors” is a right saying when it comes to your amniotic sac. Besides holding your baby in, it protects the baby and also helps in developing the lungs.
This sac is made up of membranes and is commonly called a bag of water. However, at times there can be a premature rupture of membranes in pregnancy leading to preterm labor.

Causes of premature rupture of membranes during pregnancy
During pregnancy, you are more prone to vaginal infections. If you get an infection, the walls of your uterus get affected and may turn weak leading to a premature rupture of membranes. Besides this, the membranes may also rupture prematurely if you had a fall or if the mouth of your uterus or the cervix is weak. To avoid this, your doctor may stitch the cervix to prevent preterm labor.
Signs of premature rupture of membranes during pregnancy
It is difficult for you to determine when the amniotic sac breaks. This is because the color is deceptive and you may misinterpret it as urinary incontinence. In fact, when your amniotic sac ruptures, all the fluid may not gush out at once. Instead, it may start dripping just like urine does.
The membranes normally rupture when your baby is ready to be born. When they do, you get contractions eventually leading to labor pain. However, there is a glitch here. When it just starts leaking, you may not feel the contractions. When you notice such a thing happening, smell the soaked pad to know if it is amniotic fluid or urine. Amniotic fluid is odorless and colorless.
Effect of premature rupture of membranes on the baby
After understanding this condition, you may be curious to know whether this can affect your baby in any way. If your baby is fully matured when this happens, your doctor may go ahead and get him/her delivered.
However, please note that the method of delivery depends on the amount of fluid that is lost.
If you have lost the fluid and your baby hasn’t matured, then your doctor may perform an ultrasound to determine the amount of fluid that is lost. Following this, he/she may put you on IV drops to maintain the fluid level and defer the delivery. But if you have lost all the water then he may perform a C-section to have the baby delivered.
This is mainly because without an amniotic sac, the baby cannot survive inside your womb. Also, for a normal delivery process, your uterus needs to be well hydrated to push the baby out.
In another scenario, if you have encountered a vaginal infection and if your due date is near, your doctor may get your delivery done as the infection can affect your baby if the fluid level is low.
