Swelling during pregnancy is a common occurrence. Most pregnant women are bound to experience this symptom during some stage in their pregnancy. The swelling may vary in severity and some women are likely to experience more swelling than others. When a woman becomes pregnant, her body starts producing about 50 percent more bodily fluids and blood than before so that the developing baby can receive nourishment.

This often results in swelling. The hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy could also be responsible for swelling and bloating of the feet, legs, ankles, hands and neck. The water that is retained in the body during pregnancy also helps to make the body more flexible so that it can accommodate the growing baby.

The excess fluid enables the muscles and tissue to soften in preparation for childbirth. A large amount of weight gain that occurs during pregnancy is on account of water retention.

There are some factors which can increase the likelihood of swelling in pregnancy. Most women experience swelling during pregnancy in the second trimester, while others find that is exacerbates in the third trimester. Hot and humid weather can increase the possibility of swelling and bloating. Inadequate intake of water can also cause the body to retain fluids. The lower limbs are likely to swell after standing for long periods of time. High intake of caffeinated beverages and sodium can also cause swelling. Most cases of swelling during pregnancy are normal. However if there is swelling during pregnancy of the hands and face in the middle of the second trimester, it could be indicative of a condition known as preeclampsia.

This condition causes an elevation in blood pressure. The body starts retaining fluid and releases protein in the urine. This is a serious condition that requires immediate medical attention.

One can alleviate swelling during pregnancy with remedies that are completely natural. It is advisable to avoid consuming too much sodium. Increase the intake of potassium rich foods and drink plenty of water and fluids. Regular movement of the body throughout the day will also help to reduce swelling. One can relieve swelling during pregnancy on one side of the body by ensuring that body weight is equally distributed. Wearing a support hose helps to improve blood circulation in the legs. Keeping the legs elevated while sitting or lying down will prevent the fluids from seeping into the feet and legs.
