  • As mentioned above, the prime cause of vaginal bleeding or vaginal spotting is the implantation of the fetus or embryo in the uterus. As this implantation of the fetus occurs in the first trimester of pregnancy, vaginal spotting or bleeding lasts for seven to twelve days of early pregnancy. The incidence of vaginal bleeding is not frequent and the amount of spotting is minimal.
  • One of the other reasons for vaginal bleeding could be an ectopic pregnancy, also termed as molar or tubal pregnancy. In such cases, the fetus or embryo gets implanted in the fallopian tube rather than in the uterus, posing a serious threat to the mother. In incidences of ectopic or molar pregnancy, vaginal bleeding occurs in copious amount and lasts for a prolonged period of time. In such cases, vaginal bleeding or spotting may indicate termination of the pregnancy.
  • Other reasons for vaginal bleeding could be incidences of vaginal infections caused by bacteria and yeast.
  • Certain sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) also cause vaginal bleeding in pregnancy. STDs like gonorrhea and herpes lead to prolonged and frequent vaginal bleeding.

  • Premature labor may also lead to vaginal spotting in pregnancy.
  • Certain placental problems including placental abruption and placenta previa may also lead to vaginal bleeding in pregnancy.

Tips to Ameliorate Vaginal Spotting During Pregnancy

As mentioned earlier, vaginal bleeding is common in early pregnancy, but prolonged bleeding is a matter of concern. Here are a few easy tips to ameliorate vaginal spotting during pregnancy:

  • First and foremost, the pregnant woman must take complete bed rest. This will relax the nerves of the lower abdomen and organs like the vagina, uterus and fallopian tubes, thereby relieving vaginal bleeding.
  • Pregnant women must not consume aspirin if they suffer from vaginal bleeding. An intake of aspirin may increase the amount of vaginal bleeding and as such, must be avoided, unless advised or recommended by a doctor.

You are recommended to consult a doctor so as to relieve vaginal spotting. You must provide your full medical history to the doctor so that the doctor can diagnose the cause of the vaginal spotting or bleeding.
