Bleeding During Pregnancy

Vaginal bleeding during pregnancy or spotting during pregnancy is not an indication of the onset of a period during pregnancy. Vaginal bleeding during pregnancy can be a source of intense anxiety but it is a common phenomenon and is not a sign of trouble.

Most women, who experience bleeding during the first trimester especially from week 1 to 12, go on to deliver healthy babies Nevertheless it is important to take heavy bleeding during pregnancy seriously. If the bleeding has lasted for more than a day, it is important to contact your health care provider immediately. In some cases, bleeding that takes place during the second and third trimester of pregnancy can often be an indication of a possible complication.

Moreover, if the bleeding is associated with abdominal pain, cramping, high body temperature and chills during the first trimester, immediate medical attention must be sought. In understanding the factors leading to bleeding during pregnancy, the pregnant mother will know what to look for and when to contact her gynecologist.

Causes of Bleeding During Pregnancy

There are a number of causes that can lead to bleeding during pregnancy and some of the medical reasons that cause bleeding during the first trimester include:

Malignant tumors of the cervix

Cervical changes that takes place when an increased or enhanced flow of blood is led to the cervix thus causing the softening of the cervix, leading to vaginal bleeding

Ectopic Pregnancy

Implantation bleeding that takes place approximately 10 to 14 days after fertilization or when the fertilized egg adheres itself to the lining of the uterus

Spontaneous abortion

An abnormality during pregnancy - when the tiny villi that sticks out of the fetal chorion and combines with the mother's uterine tissue to form the placenta degenerates and forms clusters of fluid-filled sacs; usually associated with fetal mortality.


Cervical infections

Urinary tract infection or infections affecting the pelvic cavity.

Bleeding due to sexual intercourse, as the cervix is extremely tender and sensitive during pregnancy.

It is important to report any kind of bleeding during pregnancy to your health care provider or gynecologist. Remember to keep a note or describe how much blood has been lost and its appearance, that is, whether it had the presence of blood clots or tissue.
